Canon ditching humans, cameras hand-made by robots by 2015

Image

Canon has announced that it’ll ditch human production line employees and rely entirely on robots to build its cameras. Several Japanese companies have felt the pinch thanks to the soaring value of the yen and have acted quickly to move production overseas, but Canon has resisted doing the same. Company spokesperson Jan Misumi has said that the move won’t cause job losses as those employees will be moved into other parts of the organization once the switchover has been completed — which could be as early as 2015. Now we just need to check our diaries as to when the Robopocalypse is due to begin.

J.J. Abrams Drama, Mindy Kaling Comedy Rule Fall TV Lineup

As major networks announce their programming, MTV News picks the shows that will have you glued to the screen.

May is the month that has television fans rejoicing or mourning as TV networks, at their upfront presentations, announce which shows are being picked up, which are being renewed and which are getting the ax. The fall lineup looks particularly interesting as Deadline reports what’s in store for CBS, the CW, Fox and NBC. From a “Sex and the City” prequel to a daring dystopian drama from J.J. Abrams, we’ve picked the shows that’ll have us glued to our small screens for their debuts come the fall.

The first show on our list is “Partners,” based on the real-life friendship of a straight guy and a gay man. The series will star Michael Urie of “Ugly Betty,” Sophia Bush of “One Tree Hill,” David Krumholtz and Brandon Routh. CBS picked up the comedy along with “Friend Me,” a show following Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicholas Braun as two best friends who move from Bloomington, Indiana, to Los Angeles to begin their new jobs at Groupon. Even though this sounds heavily like the male version of “2 Broke Girls,” Mintz-Plasse’s work in “Superbad” and “Kick-Ass” has us interested in the pilot.

One of the reigning networks in teen television, the CW, picked up the highly anticipated “Sex and the City” prequel, “The Carrie Diaries.” The show centers on a young Carrie Bradshaw navigating the ups and downs of high school in the 1980s (and always looking fabulous while doing so). Along with Miss Bradshaw, the channel also chose “Arrow,” based on DC Comics’ “Green Arrow.” The series will turn the protagonist into less of a superhero and more of an action star in the same vein as Jason Bourne. And although the CW canceled “Ringer” and “The Secret Circle,” the network picked up “Gossip Girl” for its final season. Maybe this will prompt Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf into a final romance? We can only hope!

Over in Fox-land, they’ve renewed hit shows “Glee,” “Fringe” and “The X Factor” as well as the breakout series “New Girl.” Added to the lineup is “The Mindy Project,” a single-camera comedy by Mindy Kaling following a woman’s anxious attempt to rid herself of all her bad habits. “After all, how many doctors make inappropriate toasts at their ex-boyfriend’s wedding, nearly drown at the bottom of a stranger’s pool and get arrested for disorderly conduct just moments before having to deliver a baby?” Deadline asks when describing the show.

Apparently, not enough — we’ll be watching! Also chosen by the network is “The Goodwin Games,” centering on three grown siblings who return home following their father’s death. When they’re made aware of their unexpected $20 million inheritance, they must go through a series of tasks their father left behind before they can claim their money. So no, folks, there won’t be blood; this isn’t a small-screen take on “The Hunger Games.”

But speaking of dystopian dramas, after renewing veteran comedy “The Office” and the popular reality series “The Voice,” NBC picked up a new series produced by J.J. Abrams called “Revolution.” The show centers on the world 15 years after the electricity is mysteriously shut off and families are living quiet lives aided by candlelight and lanterns. When one young woman’s father is murdered by the militia, she sets off on a journey with two unlikely companions to discover what happened in the past and how to retrieve their lost future. Do you think this is all Dharma’s fault?

Which shows are you excited to watch this fall? Tell us in the comments.

AT&T stops offering Xbox 360 U-verse bundle until it can deliver an updated version

AT&T temporarily pulls the plug on its Xbox 360 U-verse kit, says it's working to improve it

In a relatively strange fashion, AT&T’s quietly pulled the plug on its U-verse kit for the Xbox 360 — at least for the time being. According to a note on its own site, the company’s taking some time to focus on “improving and enhancing” its U-verse bundle. This is probably a reference to the updated app (that would also require XBL Gold) AT&T promised for the new dashboard with Kinect support and a new UI, but has yet to deliver. As Multichannel points out, earlier last week Netflix had filed a complaint with the FCC, claiming that AT&T’s U-verse on Xbox violated network neutrality regulations — though, it’s unclear whether this had anything to do with the outfit’s decision to suspend the service. AT&T has said the set-top kit won’t “be available until the new enhancements and functionality are added,” so we’d recommend not holding your breath for too long.

Huawei Ascend D1 hits the FCC with pentaband HSPA+

Image

Of the trio of Huawei’s Diamond-class smartphones announced at Mobile World Congress in February, the dual-core Ascend D1 got the least amount of buzz. Today, however, the handset gets its opportunity to bask in the spotlight, since it’s the first of the group to obtain the FCC’s nod of approval. No huge revelations were given, but the docs confirm quadband GSM and pentaband HSPA+ / WCDMA, a welcome treat for AWS fans. As always, we can’t assume any carrier affiliation here, but at least we know the unlocked versions will work on AT&T and T-Mobile without a hitch. It looks like Huawei’s still on track for a Q2 release — let’s hope the same is true for the D1′s older siblings.

MacBook Pro and iMac with next-gen Ivy Bridge processors crop up on benchmarks (update)

Image

Yup, Apples are bound to flow beneath the Ivy Bridge at some point, but how much of a performance boost will they deliver? If you’re happy to hold onto a little skepticism, then two unexpected appearances on the Geekbench site could offer some early answers. The first purports to be an unknown ‘MacBookPro9,1′ laptop powered by an Ivy Bridge Core i7-3820QM running at 2.7GHz, which achieved a benchmark of 12252 — that’s around 17 percent better than a current equivalent Core i7 15-inch or 17-inch MacBook Pro. The second benchmark comes from an ‘iMac13,2′ running off Intel’s next-gen Core i7-3770 desktop chip clocked at 3.4GHz, which only merits a score of 12183 because it’s hobbled by 4GB of RAM. If you exclude memory and compare only the CPU integer and floating point scores, then you’re looking at a roughly nine percent gain over a current 27-inch iMac with a 3.4Ghz Core i7-2600 processor. Now, these benchmarks could be faked, or represent non-final hardware, but the motherboard codes look valid (see the source links) and they generally tally with what we’ve come to expect from Ivy Bridge: a healthy oar-stroke forwards, but nothing that would frighten the fish.

Update: 9to5Mac has done some digging and come up with a few more interesting tidbits about the upcoming MacBook Pro refresh. For one, code pulled from the Mountain Lion beta appears to indicate that the Ivy Bridge machines will boast USB 3.0 and a new GPU in the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M. The site also claims that the laptops will be slimmer than the current gen, a rumor that we’ve been hearing for quite some time now.

Audi e-bike W?rthersee lets you pop wheelies eco-style, plays nice with your smartphone

Image

We’re no stranger to e-bikes here, but most of the examples we’ve seen so far have very much been meant for A-to-B rides. Audi’s aiming to fix that with its e-bike Wörthersee prototype. The carbon fiber transport not only has a strong 2.3kW motor — the most powerful ever in a bike, so says Audi — but can use that power for tricks. You can flick the Wörthersee into a wheelie mode and either shift your weight around or leave it fully automatic, depending on the fierceness of your stunt skills. Not that it’ll be a timid ride if you prefer to keep both wheels on the ground, as a motor-assisted pedaling mode will take you up to 50MPH, and you can still ride at 31MPH if you’re not keen on using your legs. That’s faster than the already speedy Grace One City we tried, folks. The vorsprung durch technik also comes through a smartphone tie-in, although in a much more stunt-savvy way than the app- and tuning-focused Ford E-Bike Concept: it tracks video and trick runs, both for its own game system and for bragging rights on Facebook.

With a very light 3.5-pound carbon fiber frame and a quick 2.5-hour charge-up time, the e-bike Wörthersee sounds like a wild ride that will charge quickly enough for a spin on your lunch break, but we wouldn’t rush to put down a deposit. Audi is calling the prototype a “show bike,” which is a sign than the design as-is won’t show up at the local sports store. We’ll let you know if the Wörthersee or a more pragmatic descendant makes the leap to a dealer.

‘Avengers’ Opening Weekend Shatters Box-Office Records

Marvel’s estimated $200 million kickoff surpasses final ‘Harry Potter’ flick’s record, knocking ‘Think Like a Man’ to #2.
By Ryan J. Downey

When it comes to superhero team-ups, it looks like the whole truly is greater than the sum of its parts: “The Avengers” rocked the box office over the weekend, shattering all domestic opening weekends with an estimated $200 million kickoff. That take is significantly higher than the previous record-holder, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” which collected $169.2 million when it opened last year.

Marvel’s landmark comic book flick — which unites Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) against an otherworldly threat — became the fastest movie ever to reach $100 million, $150 million and $200 million at the box office. “The Avengers” also enjoyed the highest per-theater average ever for a nationwide release with $46,057 per theater.

Each Avenger has existed within the same Marvel movie universe since Samuel L. Jackson’s first post-credits appearance as Nick Fury in 2008′s “Iron Man.” With the start of its own studio, Marvel was able to circumvent the multiple licensing issues that prevented their heroes from crossing over in films like “Spider-Man” (made by Sony) and “Fantastic Four” (Fox).

“The Avengers” made more in three days than the entire runs of “Captain America: The First Avenger” ($176.6 million), “Thor” ($181 million) and “The Incredible Hulk” ($134.8 million). By this weekend, it should surpass “Iron Man” ($318.4 million) and “Iron Man 2″ ($312.4 million) as well.

“Marvel’s The Avengers” (the official title, presumably to avoid confusion with a spy flick based on a British TV series) is the best reviewed of the recent crop, boasting a 93 percent positive critic’s average on Rotten Tomatoes at press time.

Thanks to “Avengers,” this past weekend brought in the overall fifth-highest box office of all time. The flick’s 82.7 percent of the weekend’s $242 million put it right behind “Spider-Man 3″ for biggest weekend market share, according to Box Office Mojo. According to reports, 40 percent of audiences saw it in 3-D, and IMAX theaters simply didn’t have enough seats to accommodate demand.

“Avengers” has made $441.5 million abroad, where it opened a week before. That makes the movie’s overall two-week gross more than $641 million, easily placing it at #1 as the biggest movie of 2012 thus far.

No stranger to balancing an ensemble and mixing comic relief with supernaturally driven dramatic tension, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” mastermind Joss Whedon (who co-wrote and directed) isn’t officially signed on for “The Avengers 2,” but there are, of course, already several “Avengers”-related movies in production. Marvel already has “Iron Man 3″ as well as sequels to “Thor” and “Captain America” on the docket, plus filmmaker Edgar Wright’s long-discussed “Ant-Man.”

“Avengers” was the first Marvel movie to be marketed and released by Disney, who bought Marvel for $4 billion back in August 2009.

As for the other movies in theaters over the weekend, “Think Like a Man” (which was #1 for the previous two weekends) was #2 with $8 million. Based on comedian Steve Harvey’s self-help book, “Think Like a Man” was produced for just $12 million and has made $73 million domestically already.

“The Hunger Games,” which is now #4 on the all-time weekend openings list, was #3 with $5.7 million giving it a seven-week domestic total of $380.7 million. Zac Efron’s “The Lucky One” was just behind with $5.5 million for a three-week total of $47.9 million. “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” rounded out the top five with $5.4 million. The latest from Oscar-winning British animation house Aardman Animations has made $185 million domestically thus far. In a bit of counter-programming, Fox Searchlight’s smart dramatic comedy “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” opened in 27 theaters, taking in $750,000.

Who will be brave enough to challenge Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this weekend? Tim Burton’s campy adaptation of classic British vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows,” with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter (naturally) in the leads, will make its debut, as will smaller pictures like “God Bless America” (written and directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait) and Eva Mendes’ “Girl in Progress.”

The biggest challengers for “The Avengers” will be other heroes: “The Amazing Spider-Man” (July 3) and “The Dark Knight Rises” (July 20). “The Dark Knight” holds the #3 biggest opening-weekend record, while “Spider-Man 3″ ranks at #5.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers.”
