?It is worthwhile to take him to other places, not just Mr. Herzl and Yad Vashem, particularly to the Ma?aras HaMachpelah to explain to him this is not just a safe haven, but this is the land of our forefathers, the land promised to the Jewish People by HKBH.

Struk then moved on to address the deteriorating situation on the road of Yehuda and Shomron, calling on her colleagues to express concern with the fact that so many people are attacked daily as they make their way to and from their homes.

So that makes TWO Republicans who realize there could be a problem with ?optics? when the GOP holds a panel on ?successful communications? with minorities, at a plantation. Congratulations Robert Costa and ?source?! Here, if you would care to peruse it, is a kooky list of the Burwells? slaves. But we feel like the organizers of the GOP retreat at Williamsburg, which includes this happy-fun-time field trip, might have missed some opportunities?

NOPE. This is where a list of other incredibly thoughtful and smart ?outreaches? the GOP could make to other groups would go, if anything could possibly be smarter than having a panel on communicating with minorities at a former plantation.

You have bested us, GOP. Better luck to us next time!

UPDATE: Meh, the panel is being held in a ROOM called Burwell Plantation, not at the plantation itself. You?re GOLDEN, GOP. YOU?RE FINE. That is TOTALLY FINE, sure why not.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe lost his way kayaking in the waters off New York’s Long Island and was picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and ferried to a harbor, officials said Sunday.

The 48-year-old actor was kayaking with a friend and launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon on the Long Island Sound, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki. As it got dark, the two got lost and eventually headed for shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out.

The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the area, and heard Crowe call out to them from the shore around 10 p.m., Swieciki said. The “Gladiator” actor and his friend, who Swieciki didn’t recognize, paddled over to the boat. The Coast Guard officers pulled them up and, along with their kayaks, gave them a ride to Huntington Harbor.

“He just needed a little bit of help, he just got a little lost,” Swieciki said. “It wasn’t really a rescue, really, more of just giving someone a lift.”

Swieicki said no one was injured, and the two men were wearing life vests. He said the actor, who was grateful and friendly, seemed like he was a fairly experienced kayaker.

Crowe sent a Twitter message about 1:30 a.m. Sunday thanking the officers, and saying he was out on the water four and a half hours.

“Thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way…4 hrs 30 mins, 7m(11.2km),” he wrote.

Crowe is on Long Island filming a new movie called “Noah” in Oyster Bay. The biblical epic is directed by Darren Aronofsky and scheduled for release in 2014.

Crowe won an Academy Award for best actor for his role as a Roman soldier called Maximus in “Gladiator.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as “Top Gun,” ”Days of Thunder” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge, authorities said.

The 68-year-old Scott‘s death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner‘s Lt. Joe Bale said.

“I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time,” Scott‘s spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement.

Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.

A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott’s body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner’s office.

One lane of the eastbound side of the bridge was closed to traffic during the investigation. Cargo vessels moved at reduced speeds through the east side of the port’s main channel during the search, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

Investigators found a note in Scott’s black Toyota Prius, which was parked on the bridge, according to the Los Angeles Times. That note listed contact information. A suicide note was later found at his office.

The British-born Scott, who lived in Beverly Hills, was producer and director Ridley Scott‘s younger brother. Distinct visual styles mark both siblings’ films ? Ridley Scott mastering the creation of entire worlds with such films as “Gladiator,” ”Blade Runner,” ”Alien” and this year’s “Prometheus,” Tony Scott known for hyper-kinetic action and editing on such films as his most recent, the runaway train thriller “Unstoppable,” starring regular collaborator Denzel Washington.

Scott was a thrill-seeker himself in his personal life, an avid rock climber who also liked driving fast cars and motorcycles. Still, filmmaking was his real thrill.

“The biggest edge I live on is directing. That’s the most scary, dangerous thing you can do in your life,” Scott said in an interview for his 1995 naval adventure “Crimson Tide.” ”The scariest thing in my life is the first morning of production on all my movies. It’s the fear of failing, the loss of face and a sense of guilt that everybody puts their faith in you and not coming through.”

Tony was the first of the Scott brothers to enjoy blockbuster success with “Top Gun,” starring Tom Cruise, the top-grossing film of 1986 at $176 million. Scott teamed with Cruise again four years later on the hit “Days of Thunder.” He also had a sequel to “Top Gun” in development.

But Ridley Scott later managed more and bigger hits than his brother and earned a level of critical respect never achieved by Tony Scott. “Gladiator” won the best-picture Academy Award for 2000 and earned Ridley Scott one of his three best-director nominations; Tony Scott never was in the running for an Oscar, and critics often slammed his movies for emphasizing style over substance.

Even Scott admitted that it was a challenge to infuse drama into some of his scenarios ? for example, cars racing in circles in “Days of Thunder.” In an interview for that 1990 summer hit, Scott was blunt about where some of the ideas came from.

“I went back and I stole from all race movies to date,” Scott said. “I took the better elements, then tried to build on them. Really, the speed, the energy and the placement of the audience inside some of the cars came in the editing room. …

“I’m always pushing for something new and fresh in the way things are shot, and the rest happens in the editing room. … The real speed comes from the cutters and what they do with the celluloid.”

While Ridley Scott had an auspicious start to his film career with 1977′s acclaimed period drama “The Duellists” and 1979′s “Alien,” Tony Scott bombed with his debut, 1983′s supernatural romance “The Hunger,” with David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve.

He vaulted into Hollywood’s top ranks the next time out, with “Top Gun,” followed a year later by “Beverly Hills Cop II,” both with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

The two brothers ran Scott Free Productions and were working jointly on a film called “Killing Lincoln,” based on the best seller by Bill O’Reilly. Along with countless commercials, their company produced the CBS dramas “NUMB3RS” and “The Good Wife” as well as a 2011 documentary about the Battle of Gettysburg for the History Channel.

Tony Scott said he gained perspective by mixing things up between film, TV and commercials.

“I like changing the pace of my life, changing my discipline. It gives me ideas for how to see the world differently,” Scott said in a 2007 interview.

Besides “Unstoppable,” Scott worked with Washington on four other movies: “Crimson Tide,” ”Man on Fire,” Deja Vu” and “The Taking of Pelham 123.”

In a tweet Sunday, director Ron Howard said, “No more Tony Scott movies. Tragic day.”

Director Jon Favreau tweeted, “Such sad news about Tony Scott. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

Other Scott films include “True Romance,” written by Quentin Tarantino, “The Fan,” with Robert De Niro, and “Enemy of the State,” starring Will Smith.

Scott was married to actress Donna Scott, who appeared in several of her husband’s films. They have twin sons.

Completed in 1963, the 6,060-foot Vincent Thomas Bridge links rises 185 feet at its highest point above the Los Angeles Harbor. Many have taken their lives by jumping from the span.

The bridge has been used in many Hollywood productions, among them “Charlie’s Angels,” ”Gone in 60 Seconds” and “The Fast and the Furious.”

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, average person holds 11 jobs between the age of 18 and 44. Does this mean you have to juggle multiple 401(k) plans and deal with stacks of account statements? You may choose to do so, but in most scenarios, it makes practical and financial sense to rollover your retirement dollars away from your former employers.

There are four options regarding what you can do with your old employers? 401(k)s.

Option 1: Leave it with your former employer.
If your former employer?s 401(k) plan is good, you might consider keeping your investments with its plan. A good plan will have excellent investment options along with low administration fees. Usually, these two combinations are rare and there are more cost effective ways manage your retirement dollars by transferring your 401(k) account into another retirement account without being subject to unnecessary taxes or withdrawal penalties. But if leaving your 401(k) with your old employer is the best option, your account needs to meet the minimum balance for the plan.

Option 2: Cash out your 401(k)
This is should be the last resort and really should not even be an option. As mentioned in Option 1, you do not want to deal with unnecessary taxes or withdrawal penalties. The employer is required to withhold 20% of the account balance for IRS and if you are younger than age 59?, there will be a 10% early withdrawal penalty. Simply put, do not take this route unless you really need that cash.

Option 3: Rollover into current employer?s 401(k) plan.
If your current employer offers a 401(k) plan that allows you to rollover your old 401(k)s into the plan, you might consider this option. Your decision should largely be based on investment options of the new plan. But just as with your former employers? 401(k)s, usually the investment choices are limited and you will find better options by rolling into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA).

Option 4: Rollover into your own IRA
Rolling funds into an IRA will probably be the best option when it comes to diversifying your portfolio, as you will not be limited to fund choices that are offered by the 401(k) sponsor. IRAs almost always have more investment options than 401(k)s. IRA investments can include individual stocks, bonds and mutual funds while majority of the 401(k) plans are structured only with mutual funds. If you would like to have full control of investment options, this will be the best option for you.

These descriptions are just overviews of each option and depending on your situation, various items can lead to what would be the best choice for you. Please consult with a professional before making any transactions and know that you can always contact Bright Financial Ideas with your questions!

A Different Kind of Education

San Jose Schools face the same problem that all school districts around the country face, losing at risk students. The San Jose School District has found a solution to this problem while still including these students as a part of the traditional school population. San Jose Schools alternative school program allows for individual attention to the students? needs while having them participate in activities at the regular campuses.

For some students the traditional school format doesn?t work. Students can become apathetic and risk not graduating. In the San Jose School District?s alternative education program students can play sports, participate in extracurricular activities and be included in the graduation ceremonies of a regular school. At risk students can have English language proficiency issues, difficulty in motivation, simply moving to a new school or many other seemingly small but crucial reasons. San Jose Schools are successfully meeting the needs of these students.

Helping Students to Learn

The alternative education program of San Jose School District could become a model for the rest of the country. Classes in these programs tend to be much smaller and focus on the needs of the individual student. The San Jose School District has approximately thirty-two thousand students, so has to find a way to manage the needs of all thee students while dealing with the concerns of budget and resource allocation.

San Jose Unified School District has created smaller alternative specialty campuses inside six of its high schools. Each of these campuses has about fifty students being instructed by two teachers and an on-site counselor. The students involved in the program are generally juniors or seniors who are in peril of actually graduating from high school. The aim of the program is to help these students catch up in the academic credits needed to graduate. The students spend about half the day in intensive classes and the rest of the day taking classes at a community college or a vocational training facility.

The principal of San Jose School District?s alternative program, Linda Ferdig-Riley, uses information provided by the high schools to choose the students who are in need of assistance and will be included in the program. The program provides a distinctive and exclusive curriculum for each student. These specialized plans include monthly reporting of grades, personalized counseling sessions, and career guidance that is specifically designed of the different students.

How San Jose School District?s Alternative Program Compares

This program appears to be working; San Jose School District has around a seven percent dropout rate as compared to the California state average which is double that rate. The amount of students in the program is smaller than that in other district yet the results seem to be better. The number of students considered for the program is far more than the number of available spaces.

Other alternative educational programs in the state keep the students from actively feeling that they are a part of the school population. San Jose School District?s alternative program relieves the fears that could keep students from taking advantage of this opportunity. This program allows students to attend school functions at their old high school which helps to keep them as a part of the school population and alleviates the stresses the students feel when changing to the alternate campus. When trying to keep students in school these types of pressures might be key in keeping them in school.

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 19, 2012 In a thrust against the major problem of counterfeit medicines sold in developing countries, which causes thousands of illnesses and deaths annually, scientists today described development of a simple, paper-strip test that people could use to identify counterfeit versions of one of the most-frequently faked medicines in the world.

Their report on an inexpensive test to identify fake tablets of Panadol was presented here at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.

Panadol is one of multiple brand names used abroad for the pain-and-fever-reliever acetaminophen, most familiar in the U.S. as Tylenol. The scientists emphasized that no such problem exists with Tylenol or other acetaminophen products marketed in the U.S.

However, Toni L. O. Barstis, Ph.D., a chemistry professor and leader of the research team at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind., said that ersatz Panadol and other counterfeit brand-name acetaminophen products are the tip of the iceberg in a wider problem of fake drugs sold in developing countries.

“Panadol long has been among the most common, standard pain-relieving drugs counterfeited around the world,” Barstis said. “But the problem has taken on a troubling new dimension. In the past, you could just look at the labeling and packaging and know if it was counterfeit. Now, they do such a good job with the package design it’s hard to determine whether it’s a package of the genuine medicine or a fake that contains no acetaminophen or even ingredients that may be harmful.”

The World Health Organization estimates that at least 10 percent of the drug supply in developing countries consists of counterfeit medicines, causing thousands of deaths every year. Problems have been documented, for instance, in Kenya, Nigeria, India, Vietnam and Panama. Many of the deaths occur among people who unknowingly take counterfeit antibiotics and anti-malaria medicines that do not contain the active ingredient to combat those diseases. In addition to lacking the active ingredient, counterfeit medicines may harm people by containing ingredients that are potentially toxic. Officials blame crime rings, which profit from selling at full-price pills that contain plaster of Paris, baking soda or other inexpensive ingredients.

Compounding the problem, Barstis explained, is the difficulty in testing medications for authenticity. In some instances, it may take 3-6 months to test a batch of suspect drugs because the testing is usually done in Europe or the U.S. Barstis’ team responded to that situation with the new test for Panadol, which takes less than 10 minutes, can be done by consumers and also can be used by personnel in government regulatory agencies, clinics and hospitals.

The test consists of chemically treated paper the size of a business card. To check for counterfeit ingredients, a person simply swipes the pill over the paper and dips the paper in water. Color changes on the paper indicate suspicious ingredients. Barstis validated the test on 570 pills, including many with fake ingredients added by researchers. The College has applied for a patent for the test.

Barstis’ team now is developing a similar test to identify counterfeit antibiotics, anti-malaria drugs, and Tamiflu, the influenza medication. The team works in collaboration with chemistry, biochemistry, computer science and industrial design teams at the University of Notre Dame, Ind.

Abstract

Low-quality pills pose a major health threat in developing countries where analytical resources are scarce. Panadol (known as Tylenol in the United States) is a commonly counterfeited analgesic, having little or no active ingredient or fake incorrect excipients such as baking soda or chalk. Using simple, colorimetric chemistry on a paper-based device, undergraduates at Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN) have developed a low-tech method that accurately detects adulterated Panadol pills. Many life-saving medicines are adulterated with similar excipients, and Panadol’s active ingredient itself is a counterfeit component in these medicines. For this reason, the device which detects Panadol is the starting point for screening other drugs such as antimalarials and antibiotics. Over 500 field trials were completed during spring 2012 in order to validate the devices for use overseas in summer 2012. Speakers will discuss the development of the devices, as well as the process and results of the validation study.
